Getting Started with Inspections

Inspections are the main method of data collection in GS. Follow this guide to create a simple Inspection to collect SPC and DMS data.

This guide assumes you have already set up Parts, Characteristics, and Defects.

Best Practices

To get the most out of Inspections in GS, follow these best practices.

  • Make sure that Inspections have a Published Revision. In order for Users with the List and Run Published Revision permission to run an Inspection, it must be published. Otherwise, the Inspection will not appear in their Inspection list page.
  • All data must have an associated Process. Either set the Process in the Inspection settings or add a Process Test to set the Process.
  • Use Developer Mode to submit temporary data. When testing an Inspection, switch your Script Mode setting to Development to submit dev data. Dev data is automatically cleaned up after a few days, based on the Global Setting

When setting up Sub-Inspections, ask yourself the following questions.

  • Are there obvious logical groups of Tests? If different users are performing visual, dimensional, and chemical checks, create three different Sub-Inspections: Visual Checks, Dimensional Checks, and Chemical Checks.
  • Are there tasks that must be performed in a particular order? If a single Inspection is for an entire assembly process and the quality checks for each step are done at different times, create a different Sub-Inspection for each step.
  • Are users expected to use multiple Serial Devices to simultaneously measure multiple Characteristics of a Part? If so, all the SPC Tests for these Characteristics should be added to the same Sub-Inspection. This makes it easy for the user to switch between devices without leaving the screen.
