Getting Started with Traceability

Traceability is descriptive information that is stored alongside data. Collecting accurate Traceability is key to performing useful analysis.

Best Practices

To get the most out of Traceability in GS, follow these best practices.

  • Spend time thinking about how you want to split and group data during analysis. Traceability is the most critical piece of useable, actionable analysis. Collecting just enough information will give you insights with none of the noise.
  • Most Traceability should be Text. Do not choose a numeric type (Decimal, Integer, or Currency) for data that is categorical, even if the values only consist of numbers. For example, a serial number should be a Text Traceability; continuous values like temperature should be Decimal.
  • Use preset options. If there are a list of acceptable values for a Traceability, set them as Preset Values and turn on the setting to restrict input to only those values.
