Collecting Traceability

Traceability allows data to be tagged with context, such as lot number, shift, operator, or machine. This guide explains each method for collecting Traceability in an Inspection.

When storing data, the value of each Traceability field is determined based on the first available source in the following order:

  1. The Test-Specific Traceability setting on the Test submitting the data.
  2. A Traceability Test on the same Sub-Inspection as the Test submitting the data.
  3. A Traceability Test in the Inspection Data panel.
  4. The User's Contextual Traceability.
  5. The Workstation's Contextual Traceability.
  6. The Characteristic's Preset Traceability (only applicable for SPC data).
  7. The Process's Preset Traceability.
  8. None

Test Specific Traceability

Every data Test supports Test Specific Traceability. This property is used when you need to assign different Traceability values to individual Tests on the same Sub-Inspection.

To configure Test-Specific Traceability:

  1. Add a data Test (such as an SPC Test) to a Sub-Inspection.
  2. In the Test Specific Traceability property, click Edit. An image showing the Test-Specific Traceability property of an SPC Test
  3. For each Traceability you want to collect on a per-Test basis:
    1. Select the Traceability.
    2. Optionally set a preset value.
    3. Select whether the value should be visible and editable when running the Inspection. An image showing the Test-Specific Traceability overlay
  4. Click Confirm.

When the Inspection is run, any Traceability marked as Visible will appear inside the Test. This allows the user to change the Traceability value on a per-Test basis.

Traceability Test

The Traceability Test is used to collect Traceability values from the operator while running an Inspection. Traceability Tests can be added to the Inspection Data panel or to a Sub-Inspection.

  • A Traceability Test added to a Sub-Inspection applies only to the Tests within that Sub-Inspection.
  • A Traceability Test added to the Inspection Data panel applies to all Tests across all Sub-Inspections.

When both are present, the Sub-Inspection value takes precedence.

Contextual Traceability

Some Traceability values are set automatically based on context, such as the selected Process, User, or Workstation.

Processes and Characteristics

Each Process and Characteristic has a Traceability section on their setup page. When data is submitted for one of these entities, Traceability values are pulled from this section and applied to the data.

Users and Workstations

Each User and Workstation has a Traceability section on their setup page. When a User submits data, the contextual Traceability of their User and their selected Workstation are applied to the data.
