Using the Data Canvas
Using a Data Canvas can make it easy for new users to quickly identify which dimensions of a physical part need to be measured. It also increases the information density in an Inspection, allowing operators to enter more readings in a smaller space.
In this guide, you will configure a Data Canvas Test. It assumes that you already have a Defect and multiple Characteristics created.
Select an Image
The Data Canvas Test displays other Tests overlaid on a background image.
Start by find a drawing or image of one of the parts produced at your facility. If you do not have access to such an image, you can download the one used in this guide. After selecting an image to use, upload it to GS.
Create the Inspection
Set up an Inspection with a Data Canvas:
- Navigate to the Inspection list.
- Press the Add button.

- Fill in the Name field with Data Canvas Inspection.
- Press the Save button.

- Add a Data Canvas Test.
- Drag an SPC Test from the toolbar onto the Data Canvas.
- Edit the Test's Characteristic property and select a Characteristic with a subgroup size of 1.
- Repeat for another SPC Test.
- Add a Pass/Fail Test to the Data Canvas by dragging it from the toolbar.
- Select a Defect for the Test.
- Set the label of the Test to Thread Check.
- Rearrange the Tests so one SPC Test is over the length of the bolt, the other SPC Test is over the head, and the Pass/Fail Test is over the threading.
- Tests can be rearranged by dragging them inside the Canvas.
- Tests can be resized horizontally by dragging their edges.
- Select the Save and Run action.
Run the Inspection
- Run the Sub-Inspection that contains the Data Canvas Test. It should look something like this:

- Enter values for the SPC Tests and select a value for the Pass/Fail.
- Click Submit.
